Butoh Lantern is pleased to announce that we will return to beautiful Stoa in Sirince village in Izmir, Turkey for another month March 1 – 26, 2021. Our first month (January 11 – February 5) was filled with creativity, skill building and dynamic performance making. Our relationships with students and retreat staff have flowed and strengthened with each day. We feel very much welcome and at home here and look forward to expanding the connections made between us all.

Stoa is a unique center for artistic research, a temple to creativity. Students have joined us here from Russia, US, Italy and all over Turkey. We look forward to expanding that number. We are honored to assist in building the relevancy and integration of their program both in Turkey as well as internationally through the effects of our work and the kinship we feel as a result of our rapport.

About Butoh Lantern:
Butoh Lantern’s workshops are as unique as its artists. Adam Koan, Julie Becton Gillum and Ozerk Sonat Pamir offer over 60 years of combined performance experience in theater and dance. Their approach blends physical training for the body as well as instruction in performance improvisation and butoh dance. Adam’s Shadowbody research combines physical, intellectual and spiritual methods for a resonant butoh process. Julie”s Noguchi Taiso practice conditions and prepares the body for a meaningful movement / dance experience. Through his “Ecosystems of Emotion,” Ozerk guides improvisation explorations that delve into the power of the responsive body in performance.

The retreat setting allows for Monday through Friday classes (6 hours per day) leaving weekends open for performances, jam sessions and other presentations. These workshops can benefit all levels of experience from beginners to professionals. Butoh Lantern Mountain Retreat is a wonderful opportunity for a profound dance experience in a magnificent natural setting during the dark creative season of deep winter. Butoh Lantern, 1 – 25 Mart

“Geçtiğimiz Ocak-Şubat döneminde gerçekleştirdiğimiz ilk inzivamız, beklentilerimizin de ötesinde, çok derin araştırmaların ve hem özgün hem de yüksek nitelikli işlerin ortaya çıktığı bir süreç oldu.

Türkiye, Rusya, ABD ve İtalya’dan gelen katılımcılarla uluslararası bir etkinlik olarak gerçekleştirdiğimiz inzivamız (dünyanın çoğu yerinde sanatçıların evlerinde izole oldukları bir dönemde) bir araya gelerek çalışmanın, üretmenin ve işbirliği içinde olmanın ne kadar dönüştürücü ve iyileştirici bir deneyim olduğunu hepimize gösterdi.

Şu anda dünyada bu kadar uzun soluklu yüz yüze etkinlik düzenleyen tek sanat grubu olan Butoh Lantern olarak, Stoa’nin sunduğu bu özgün araştırma ortamından bir süre daha faydalanmak istedik. Hem katılımcılar hem de Stoa Ekibi bu sürecin bir ay daha uzaması üzerinde görüş birliğine varınca, Mart ayı boyunca gerçekleşecek yeni bir Butoh İnzivası düzenlemeye karar verdik.

-Butoh Lantern Hakkında-

“Butoh Lantern, çalışma biçimleri bir birinden çok farklı üç eğitmen tarafından düzenlenen ve katılımcılara hareket tekniği (Julie – Noguchi Taiso), hareket dağarcığı (Adam- Shadowbody Butoh) ve doğaçlama performansa yönelik hareket araştırması ( Özerk- Duyguların Ekosistemleri) üzerine atölyeler sunan uzun soluklu bir sanat etkinliği.

Şirince Köyü’nde, Stoa’nde 1 Mart- 26 Mart 2021 tarihleri arasında gerçekleşecek bu Butoh İnzivası hafta içi beş gün ve günde altı saat süren yoğun atölye çalışmalarının yanısıra hafta sonları yapılacak seminerler, sunumlar, butoh jam’ler ve performanslarla oldukça zengin bir içeriğe sahip olacak.

Uluslararası bir katılımcı grubuyla gerçekleştirmeyi hedeflediğimiz bu süreç, koşullar ne olursa olsun sanatın yeryüzü için yaşamsal bir gereklilik olduğu anlayışından yola çıktı.

Katılmak için herhangi bir ön deneyim gerekmeyen bu etkinlik, paylaştığımız konulara ilgi duyan ve yoğun çalışma süreçlerine gereksinen bütün katılımcılara açık olacak.

Katılımcaların performanslarda kullanmak için kostüm olarak kullanmak istedikleri eşyaları beraberlerinde getirmelerini tavsiye ediyoruz.”

Instructors

Julie Becton Gillum

Julie is the artistic director of the Asheville Butoh Festival, has been creating, performing and teaching dance in the US, France, and Mexico for over 40 years. Julie has received numerous grants and awards for her choreography. She was awarded the 2008-09 NC Choreography Fellowship and used the funds to travel to Japan to study Butoh, her primary form of artistic expression.

Julie will share an introduction to Noguchi Taiso (exercises). This practice is slow and gentle, great for all bodies and a fabulous companion to butoh.

Julie Ashville Butoh Festival’inin Sanat Yönetmeni ve ABD, Fransa ve Meksika’da 40 yılı aşkın süredir koreograf, performansçı ve eğitmen olarak dans ediyor. Julie koreografileri için bir çok ödüle layık görüldü. 20008-09 NC Choreography Fellowship ödülünü aldı ve buradan aldığı fonlarla Butoh öğrenimi için Japonya’ya gitti.

Adam Koan

Adam is an international Butoh performer, educator, writer, and scholar with 400+ hours of guiding experience. Former facilitator at Himalaya Subbody Butoh and the organizer for the yearly 2-week Sesalac Butoh Retreat in Serbia. He/ze/they are a classically trained dancer (Hillsborough Community College & University of South Florida 2010 – 2013) and developed as a Butoh dancer after beginning Butoh in Fall of 2013 at the Himalaya Subbody Butoh School. Since then, ze has been dedicated to the art and has been exposed to various other Butoh masters such as Ken Mai, Tadashi Endo, Diego Piñón, and Yumiko Yoshioka (see here for a detailed list of training and teaching history).

Adam uluslararası işler yapan bir Butoh dansçısı, eğitmeni ve araştırmacısı. Kendisinin 400 saatten fazla eğitmenlik tecrübesi bulunmakta. Sırbistan’da senelik olarak düzenlenen Seselac Butoh Retreat’in organizatörü. Hillsborough Community College & University of South Florida’da 2010-13 yılları arasında klasik dans eğitimi alıp ardından Subbody Butoh Okulu*’nda Butoh üzerine çalışmaya başladı ve bu kurumda 2019 Eylül’üne kadar eğitmenlik yaptı. Bunun yanında Ken Mai, Tadashi Endo, Diego Pinon ve Yumiko Yoshika gibi ustaların çalışmalarına katıldı.

Özerk Sonat Pamir

Özerk Sonat Pamir is an improvisational performer who started his artistic career studying contemporary theatre with the founders of TAL (Theatre Research Laboratory) in Istanbul at 2002. He has been teaching movement research and improvisation since 2009 based on his breathbody method. His idea of performance has always been related to social issues: one of his early performances was a political happening that was criticizing solitary confinement in prisons. He also performed to support and raise awareness for various nature conservation movements in Turkey. He has been sharing his work internationally during the last years.

Çağdaş tiyatroya 2002 yılında, TAL’in kurucuları olan Ayla ve Beklan Algan’dan Çağdaş Tiyatro eğitimi alarak başlamış bir doğaçlama performans sanatçısı. 2009 yılından beri kendi “Nefesbeden Metodu’nu” temel alarak hareket araştırması ve doğaçlama performans atölyeleri veriyor. Son yıllarda “duyguların ekosistemleri” ve “işlevsel estetik” kavramlarını da metoduna dahil ederek uluslararası düzeyde performanslarına, projelerine ve atölye çalışmalarına devam etmekte.

*Hindistan Dharamsala’da yer alan bu okulda Adam ve Özerk iki sene kadar eğitmenlik yaptılar ve okul kurucusunun çocuk istismarcısı olduğunun ortaya çıkması üzerine o dönemki öğrencilerle birlikte okuludan ayrılıp kendi organizasyonlarını yapmaya başladılar. Julie ile beraber Butoh Vigilantes adı altında atölyeler ve performanslar yapan bir grup kurdular. Butoh Lantern bu sürecin sonunda ortaya çıktı.

Weekly participation to the workshop covers the period from 10:00am. on MONDAY to 5:30pm on FRIDAY. (Begins on every Monday at 10.00 a.m.)

The workshops will take place from Monday to Friday, every day between 10.00 – 17.30. 13.30 – 14.30 is lunch time.

Please indicate the dates you want to participate in the “Checkin – Checkout Dates” section on the application form. (Note: In case of participation for more than a week, the updated price will be sent to you.)

Atölye’ye haftalık katılım PAZARTESİ sabah 10.00 ve CUMA 17.30’a kadar olan süreyi kapsar. (Program her Pazartesi saat 10.00’da başlar)

Atölyeler Pazartesi’den Cuma’ya Her Gün 10.00 – 17.30 saatleri arasında gerçekleşecektir. 13.30 – 14.30 öğle yemeği saatidir.

Who can apply?

Anyone interested in the issues we work on.
No prior experience is required to participate.
We think this workshop will be a productive experience for dancers, actors, performance artists, movement and art therapists.

It is recommended that you bring costumes and accessories for use during the workshop and weekly performances.

Two of the instructors run the workshop in English. 1 Trainer conducts both in English and Turkish. To participate in the workshop, you must be able to communicate in basic / intermediate English.

Eğitmenlerden ikisi atölyeyi İngilizce yürütmektedir. 1 Eğitmen hem İngilizce hem Türkçe yürütmektedir. Atölyeye katılım için temel/orta düzeyde ingilizce iletişim kurabilmeniz gerekmektedir.

Atölye sırasında ve haftalık performanslarda kullanmak üzere kostüm ve aksesuar getirmeniz önerilir.
